From Understanding to Using French

从“学过法语”到“会用法语”

One of the most rewarding moments in language teaching is seeing students move beyond understanding a language and begin using it confidently.

In the early stages of learning French, students spend much of their time building vocabulary, learning functional language, and understanding grammar patterns. Much of the classroom focus is naturally placed on listening and reading, helping students develop strong receptive skills.

As a result, many students can understand a surprising amount of French before they feel confident using it themselves.

DELF preparation often helps bridge that gap.

Through structured revision, authentic exam tasks, and targeted speaking and writing practice, students are encouraged to actively use the language they have learned. Vocabulary, verbs, and grammar structures that were once recognised passively begin to work together in meaningful communication.

For many learners, this is the moment when French changes from something they understand into something they can use.

From a teaching perspective, this is one of the most valuable aspects of DELF preparation. The examination itself is important, but the real benefit often lies in the process. Students learn to organise ideas, express opinions, and communicate more independently.

In fact, even when students do not intend to sit the examination, I believe there is tremendous value in incorporating a period of structured productive-skills training after completing a stage of learning.

Because language learning is not simply about what students know.

It is about what they can do with what they know.
