Understanding DELF Prim & DELF Junior

Many parents ask whether DELF is similar to IELTS or Cambridge English exams.

The answer is yes.

DELF (Diplôme d'Études en Langue Française) is the official French language qualification awarded by the French Ministry of Education. It is recognised internationally and is often considered the French equivalent of Cambridge English qualifications.

Unlike IELTS, DELF certificates never expire. Once a level has been obtained, it remains valid for life.

For children and teenagers, the two most common versions are:

DELF Prim – designed for 7-11 years old students

DELF Junior – designed for s12-17 years old students

Although the exam papers differ, certificates at the same level carry the same official value and recognition.

Beyond school-age learners, DELF qualifications are also widely used as proof of French language ability for study, work, and immigration purposes. Higher levels such as B1 and B2 are commonly referenced in French-speaking immigration pathways and university admissions, depending on the specific requirements of each institution or programme.

At Chanson Languages, we view DELF as more than an examination. It provides students with a clear learning goal, a sense of achievement, and a recognised milestone in their language-learning journey.

DELF Prim ——

DELF Junior ——
