If My Child Learns French for a Year, What Will They Be Able to Say?
One of the questions parents ask us most often is: “If my child learns French for a year, what will they actually be able to say?"
There isn't a single answer. Every child learns at a different pace, and language learning develops gradually over time. Rather than trying to describe that journey, we'd like to share a real classroom moment from the beginning of it.
The video below was recorded during Lesson 9 of our beginner French class at Cockle Bay School. It is not an exam, a performance or a rehearsed presentation. It is simply a normal classroom activity, showing what our students were able to do at this stage of their learning.
Learning begins not with mastery, but with speaking.
For most of these children, this is their first experience with French. By Lesson 9, they are already able to greet one another in French, ask simple questions, and engage in basic exchanges during classroom activities. Of course, their sentences are still simple and their conversations are still short—which is completely natural for absolute beginners. This video captures just one classroom moment in their ongoing learning journey. As the course progresses, these simple exchanges will gradually become richer and more natural, and the children will grow increasingly confident in expressing themselves in French.
What matters most is that they are already using the French they have learned. They are not waiting until they know "enough" French before speaking. They are learning to communicate from the very beginning.
That is why at Chanson Languages, one of the things we value most is helping children feel brave enough to use French from the very first day of learning. They don't need to wait until they have "learned everything"—they begin communicating little by little, right from the start. Because language is not meant to be memorised—it is meant to connect. A year from now, they will have made even more progress than they have today. But every single person who can confidently communicate in French started with a simple Bonjour.
